Johnny Depp's Directorial Return with Modi to Premiere at San Sebastian Film Festival
Johnny Depp’s second venture into directing, Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness, is set to premiere out of competition at the 72nd San Sebastian Film Festival. This update was announced by the festival's organizers on Tuesday, marking a significant moment for the biographical film about the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.
Depp, who has been in the spotlight in recent years due to highly publicized legal disputes with ex-wife Amber Heard, returns to the director’s chair after more than two decades. His first directorial effort, The Brave, was released in 1997. Despite the challenges in his personal life, Depp’s involvement in Modi has sparked considerable interest, particularly given the distinguished subject matter and the film’s anticipated debut at one of the world’s most respected film festivals.
A Bohemian Tale Set in Wartime Paris
Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness stars Riccardo Scamarcio as the Bohemian artist Amedeo Modigliani. The cast also includes Al Pacino, Stephen Graham, and Antonia Desplat. According to the film’s synopsis, Modi is "a tale of art, love, and rejection," unfolding over a chaotic 72-hour period in the streets and bars of Paris during the turmoil of World War I.
San Sebastian Festival Lineup Expands
In addition to Modi, the San Sebastian Film Festival announced that Lumière!, l’aventure continue (Lumière! The Adventure Continues) by Thierry Frémaux has been added to the Special Screenings lineup. The festival will also feature Bagger Drama, the sophomore film by Piet Baumgartner, and Min Evige Sommer (My Eternal Summer), the debut of Sylvia Le Fanu, as part of the New Directors section.
Honoring Cate Blanchett
This year’s festival will also pay tribute to Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett with the prestigious Donostia Award for her outstanding contribution to cinema.
Golden Shell Contenders
The San Sebastian Film Festival, running from September 20-28, will see films by directors Mike Leigh, François Ozon, Edward Berger, Joshua Oppenheimer, and Costa-Gavras competing for the coveted Golden Shell.
